Reviews for Thar & Feather Restaurant

Thar and Feather you wee gem. After our horrid meal at another restaurant the night before, we were eager to wash away the experience with something more pleasant. And pleasurable it was! I had rung before hand to speak to someone in charge to double make sure all our requirements could be met- a changing table, a child friendly atmosphere, a high chair, and a quite area away from the rest- all boxes ticked, i had let them know that i was not up for disappointment due to our wasted time, and money the night before.
We arrived on time, 5:30ish, and were promptly seated by a friendly yet relaxed waitress. The atmosphere was a well lit and warm. The earth tones in Thar and feather went beautifully with the colours chosen for the tables, and arrangements throughout the room. I felt at ease to know we were seated according to my prior arrangements. As soon as we were seated, menus presented we ordered drinks. Cranberry juice, a water, and a spider float, which is not on their menu, but was made specially for the kids, and was much appreciated. soon after our drinks arrived we ordered our entire array of meals.
Starters was a tomato and braised beef soup, and lamb sweet breads, Main was a red beech smoked BBQ combo and glazed pork belly, also the kids fettuccine, which is the same as the adults version just smaller. more drinks, and before we knew it our mains had arrived.
This unusual sweet smoky scent followed as a beautifully presented plate or ribs and chicken was placed before us, my glazed pork belly was there a minute after, and so was the fettuccine. What a delight for the senses!
The tomato and beef braised soup was delicate yet distinct in flavor, beautiful after taste, after tones rich in the sweetness of the tomatoes, yet the saltiness of the beef. The lamb sweet breads vanished with in minutes. The red beech BBQ combo was a flavor I have not yet experienced. sweet, and earthy, deep woody flavor yet perfectly balanced. My glazed pork was next, and I cannot emphasis enough how wonderful the combination of ginger poached pears and pork blend in so perfectly. i would have had those wee pears as a dessert if i could, they were amazing! Our sons fettuccine was to date, the best fettuccine i have ever had, better than the Cabbage tree. A collection of flavors blended in with the perfectly cooked pasta, a creamy garlic white wine sauce was the star of the show, it is a must try dish for children and adults alike.
We were checked on when needed but did not feel intruded upon. The toilets- on a side note- were clean and tidy, changing table available and everything in place. The music was subtle enough to mix in well with the chatter of other diners, and laughter of a few children.
Our desserts were next, as well as a apple juice (lovely tart flavor) Rocky Road cheesecake, and a Rum and Chocolate Mascarpone Torte, both were thoroughly enjoyed. Though more of the berry sauce on the side would have been a good touch.
All in all, it was an entertaining night, amazing food, good ambiance, friendly staff, everything was more than what i could have hoped for.
Thar and Feather make it worth the trip to experience food and atmosphere not found elsewhere.

This is part of a sports bar establishment so the expectation is pub-type meals, but it’s a bit more than that. The lighting is dim – probably excessively but with a fire burning (one of those realistic-looking gas models), the ambience on a winter evening is pleasant.
Not a lot of diners when I arrived at about 8pm and numbers didn’t grow while I was there, so service was prompt. It was also pleasant and not intrusive.
The menu is quite extensive and in addition to the usual pub restaurant perennials (blue cod & chips, roast of the day, steak meals, shanks, ribs etc), there is an interesting choice of meals based on smoked meats. My choice was a smoked chicken lasagne, which came with a green salad. It was smothered with probably a bit too much of a tomato sauce and the lasagne itself, while OK, lacked a little in flavour. The salad was fresh and contained a nice variety of salad greens. The raw onion sliced into it wouldn’t be to everyone’s liking and I would have preferred if it was sliced on top, in order that it could be pushed aside if not required.
At $19.50, the value was reasonable.
Overall, quite acceptable but unexciting.

As a group of 8 we had a very enjoyable evening out last night with good food, service and surroundings. The dining room was busy but we were seated promptly and our meals arrived in good time. We all had different meals which were all well served, good sized and delicious. The waitresses were prompt, courteous and attentive to our needs.Thank you for a good night out we will be back!!!

We were booked in for 6.30 on a Saturday night, we walked in and they seated us right away, and ordered drinks. The drinks were a bit slow, and then we ordered and that took forever to get our food, which was very average, but no where near as long as the large group that arrived shortly after us. They had booked in, but were seated in two groups. One table got their meals promptly, and were onto dessert, and the other table still hadn’t even got their meals yet. That’s pretty slack service if you ask me. If you know you have a big group coming in, you should be prepared. It’s no excuse for sloppy service.

All I can say is – very very disappointing.
We had a table of 6 booked here on a quiet Monday evening. It took at least 20 minutes for the waitress to come over to take a drinks order then a further 10 minutes to get them to us. We then waited a very long time to order our meals which was a hassle as they messed up the orders. It took over an hour for our meals to arrive and we noticed other tables getting theirs before us even though we had placed our orders before them. The meals were average – very average. They then didn’t know how to use the til system and didn’t have enough change to give us so had to run to the bar next door.
Needless to say – first impressions last and we wont be back.
