Went here for a farewell party on the weekend with 34 other work colleagues. We had a set menu and asked if everything could come out an hour after the actually booking time. Our seating equally spaced out between the different 4 tables. Everything was well planned and they put us around the karaoke area. Food came out right, left and center and the thing we love about it the most was they were very polite and even told us what dish was what and how many more was coming out. They were huge options and we were amazing by the options and portion size. I’d recommend big groups that go here order the set menus and take the time to chat with whoever doing your booking cause they were very helpful in the end. Most of us have never had Thai food and were a little freaked out because we thought everything was super doper spicy. As matter of fact, you (the customer) had the opportunity to decide how hot you’d like your meal. And as I was really pleased with the outcome of the night, I took my own family there on Wednesday to celebrate my father-in-laws 70th birthday. Oh not forgetting they had BYO and we loved it. It’ll be one of our go to places now for my family.

Went here with a birthday group.
Food is what you would expect from most hole in the wall kiwi Thai restaurants. If small pieces of meat etc in a bowl of sauce/curry spins your wheels, tuck in!
Service was attentive and friendly.
Environment was traditional Thai.
Standout of the evening and a great point of difference was the karaoke that started later in the evening. Even the owner did a cameo… a real blast.

This place had been recommended to me by a friend, so when I was invited there for another friends birthday I was looking forward to a great experience. However I got the exact opposite, all orders are taken with a name, I hadn’t got my meal 20 minutes after the last person was served, I asked how much longer it would be, turns out my meal had been totally left off! I got my meal 30 minutes after the last person and most by this stage were finishing up. They were not busy and although they apologized I was charged full price! I was incredibly annoyed by this and will not return. The food however was good.

We have been going to the Red Elephant for many years and have had nothing but fantastic food and service every time we go. This is without doubt the best Thai food in the city. The hot sizzling dishes are especially good. They do try new dishes and flavours and you can set your own hotness levels e.g Thai hot and kiwi hot etc but surely that is why you go to ethnic restaurants. We love family restaurants and once the big groups go they love talking about home and family with customers. Cool as.

visited my friend at Christchurch and they brought me to have Thai food here. My first time to try Thai food. It was delicious! I ordered king prawn cashew nut. My friend ordered black pepper and garlic. It was also nice. Great food and friendly staff!
Definitely back here again when I visit Christchurch.

Good food but the service is terrible. They first forgot our table (after an hour and a half of waiting) then only bought 3/5 dishes out, forgetting 2 people again!!! They reluctantly after a heated discussion gave us a 50% discount which was appreciated. Subsequent visits after have been better. I would go again but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

We went for a birthday dinner, there were 14 altogether, we had to ask three times for wine glasses and waited 40 mins for the menus to be dumped on the table. When the food came we sent 3 plates back because they were cold. They came back half an hour later still cold and with some missing of their plate. my duck was really beautiful but the service was terrible, we won’t be back

What a terrible experience, the food was very average with not a lot of taste at all, the chicken was extremely difficult to find, the Red Elephant has certainly had better days, the area outside the front could be nice if it was tidied up and some decent chairs and tables were put there, half of the plants were dead!!!
What has happened, has their been a change of ownership? the Red Elephant should smarten up its act if it wants to stay open!!

I went there last week. Love Phai Thai, Tom Yum Soup and awesome whole of fish with lime sauce It’s not too spicy. I had a great time with kareoke. If you like to sing a song. Don’t miss RED ELEPHANT. That’s fantastic Thai food and good service. Let’s have a beautiful dinner!!!!!

This is possibly my favourite restaurant in Christchurch! I hate noisy places with polished floors, this is not- carpet, low acoustic tiled ceiling and plenty of space. The music is not too loud, in fact the most noise is usually from other (Kiwi) diners.
I have always found the service excellent, efficient and attentive without being a bother. There is rarely much of a wait, but I do like to order an entree to begin with in case it is a busy night.
The staff quickly begin to recognise you if you return, and greet you with much pleasure. The food is cooked by Thai chefs and is beautifully fresh, never overdone. I would warn about the fish with lime, however, It is VERY hot, even when “toned down”!
My absolute favourite is the “garlic and chilli” combination with chicken, beef or pork.
Red Elephant rice is to die for, very tasty and moreish. I always ask for Jasmine Tea to go with my meal. I have noticed a slight tendency to seat the Thai people away from the windows and I actually prefer to be on that side as the diners are quieter!
The restaurant can cater for quite large numbers but do book in as even on a “quiet” night they may be hosting a party. Karaoke from 9pm on Friday and Saturday.

I’ve been there on several occassions. Be prepared for a little wait but the food is fantastic.
Service is a bit slow.

Had a great meal here with four friends.
The food was very good – both with quantity and flavour! Our entrees were good but the selection of individual dishes was excellent and served hot in temperature a well as ‘spicyness’ – which is exactly what we requested.
The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was served at an excellent pace.
Highly recommended. We will return. Thoroughly recommended.

We went there quite often to have original Thai food. Very friendly staff there. May have to wait for a while on their busy night, better to ask for a set menu when you do a reservation.
