Delicious French food. Lovely uncomplicated menu with changing specials. Lovely people running the restaurant, looking forward to checking out the live music on a Friday. Everyone enjoyed their meals and vowed to return.

my experience there was great, I had beef bourgignon, different from what I expected but absolutely delicious! My friend had ratatouille and she enjoyed too. we shared a nice crepe for dessert. service was friendly and the place nice and tidy.
we’ll definitely be back. highly recommended

Well I’m sorry, but quite frankly we did not enjoy our evening at La Cantine. We went on Valentines day and had to wait forever for service – in fact my husband rang them on his cellphone to get them to bring a menu over to our table. They did so after about another 5 minutes. It took 40 minutes for our starter to arrive, and a further 45 minute wait for our main.
We were there for over 2 and a half hours and got fed up waiting for our dessert, had totally lost interest and so decided to pay up and leave. A $50 set menu and they would only deduct $5 for the missed dessert.
In summary, spent most of our time there famished, food was average (basically fish and boiled rice) and service indifferent.
a huge disappointment.
Nice couple who were doing the singing though.

Wow, what wine, what food. We enjoyed every minute. Great atmosphere and lovely people. I had the best lamb ever and my partner enjoyed the salmon.
If you come to Auckland a visit the la cantine is the highlight. Lorrence and Claude are phantastic hosts.

An update on my previous excellent review. Sadly, La Cantine has drastically reduced their hours and it’s hard to find them open during the day. Also, they don’t do crepes all the time only at certain times. The crepes and coffees are delicious but the dinner menu is very limited.
I just wish they’d return to opening during the day every day. Lately, when I’ve been the cafe is pretty deserted and it just has lost it’s appeal for me. Disappointing.

It was our first time here for brunch with friends – small tidy restaurant, with amazing food we had savoury and sweet crepes at our table – the staff gave great service. The eggs were perfectly cooked plus loved my mocha, just wish it wasn’t so foamy and was more liquid. We will def go again.

I took my European friend to Cantine du Torchon as a treat as she was homesick and missing exotic and divine foods.
The food was delicious, ( i am craving to return) and authentic. The service was warm and friendly and everyone spoke French and English. The atmosphere was vibrant and casual. It is one of my favourite places for genuine French cuisine.I really recommend you go there.

For the one person who wrote a reviez before…without even been there. If you call a French restaurant on 14th July at 7PM and ask for a table, what do you expect??? Did you try the other French restaurants as well? Im sure you would have had the same answer: it’s full!
Anyway, I’ve been to la cantine du torchon a couple of times for lunch. It’s a small but nice place. I liked that the waiters were French (and the chef seemed to be too, but cant guarantee that). Being French myself, there’s nothing that upsets me more than “French restaurants” where no-one is French/speaks French.
Nice place if you want a quick lunch, I don’t know about diner. It’s more crepe style than anything else, and if you want to impress your partner, I’d recommend Pastis instead, but overall it’s a nice place to go.
(If you want to go there for the 14th July or another important day for the French, maybe call them a few days before, not minutes before!!!!)
