Waitress was awesome at explaining the menu and also helping with the kids. Very funny and light hearted. The food suggestions turned out to be great. The steak with the ox tatar was the best. Steak was so tender… hmmmm lovely.

Great spot. Great staff. Great food suggestions and selections! Love it. Me and my partner visit the gin trap often and I’ve never been anything but impressed.

Two of us went there for lunch on Saturday 2/2/13, we sat in the sun on the deck which was lovely, I waited 20min for someone to approach me and ask if a wanted a drink.
We ordered, he had the lamb and I the Margarita pizza. The lamb looked nice but the pizza was horrible, it was so piled with oily cheese that the base was soggy, no one came and asked how our meals were. I only had 2 slices then took the rest home (had to flag someone down to come over and see us).
Service poor, food average, setting lovely.

We called in at the Gin Trap for a quick drink today. We ended up having the most sumptuous lunch on the deck in the sunshine.
the staff were friendly and professional and the ambiance set the scene for the most delectable Seafood Linguine we have ever tasted.
well done Marga & Rick your new menu is outstanding.

Professional and friendly waitress who clearly explained the menu and specials. The seafood soup was delicious and chunky. It was the perfect spot in front of the open fireplace on a wet and windy day.

My partner and I were here last Friday evening. The staff were fantastic. They went well beyond the call of duty to accommodate our needs, even keeping the bar open longer than scheduled to allow us to see the end of the tennis match that was playing on their screen at the time. The venue was warm and comfortable, and the staff made our experience here great.

Gins’ Trap Not Again
As the holidays quickly approach I can’t help but wonder what this New Years Day will bring. Surely, anything will be better than the last two years with morning brunch at The Gin Trap.
On the 1st of January 2009 My family and I went out for our traditional New Years Day brunch. Deciding to take in the views of the Marina we opted for the Gin Trap in Hawke’s Bay West Quay. Keeping expectations low for the rush of the holiday we could not have been further from disappointed with our experience. While we were surprisingly seated quite quickly and our drink order taken in a timely manner this would be the highlight of our outing. Drinks, of the non-alcoholic sort took over twenty five minutes to make it to our table. After being told on two occasions that our drinks were on our way, yet never appeared I made my way to the bar where I saw them on a tray, condensation dripping waiting for someone to bring them to our table. Beside me were two servers deeply engrossed in a discussion about their New Years Eve happenings and absolutely blind to our old order sitting on the bar. When I offered to take them to our table I was told that was unnecessary and they would bring them right out for us. Another 5 minutes passed before they were plopped down in front of us. It was only at this time that our food order was taken. Having a child with anaphylaxis to egg and peanut you become very accustomed to assuring all food is egg/peanut free. As our toddler was growing impatient it was requested that his meal be brought out asap to accommodate his patience and slow eating. It was emphasized to the waitstaff that our child was allergic to any egg product such as mayonnaise and please remove any such items. Our food arrived an hour later, though they forgot the childs meal despite my questioning it 30 minutes earlier. This led to a tantrum as our toddler couldn’t understand why he was unable to eat our food covered in aoli and his was nowhere in sight. When his did arrive it was accompanied with two sauces of which one was egg based and led to not only an emergency room visit but a two day stay in hospital. We expressed our frustration at the time of payment (amazing I know) as our child broke out in hives to which we received a very casual shrug of the shoulders and a “have a good day”.
On New Years Day 2010 we were gluttons for punishment opting to give the Gin Trap another shot, after all the location can’t be beat on a sunny day. DeJavu. Drinks and food took an obscene amount of time despite there actually not being many patrons as we were quite early. We attributed this to the staff hangover coefficient. Children’s platter still arrived late and while this time the egg based aoli was not on the food, the egg based tartar sauce came out in a ramekin right beside. Thank god we were quick enough to grab it out of our toddlers quick hands. The food was average and the service painful. There seemed to be no coordination of the wait staff, it was all very haphazard and therefore no one was truly accountable for any table. As we waited ever so patiently, yet seethingly, I listened to the tables around me: one grizzling that they should up and leave, the other joking about putting in a computer station at the tables so drinks could be ordered directly to the bar and bypass the “wait” staff coefficient.
New Years Day 2011 ” fool me once shame on you, fool me twice Shame on me” We will be dining elsewhere.
