Reviews for Gana Cafe

I had heard Gana had “some of the best coffee around” so we decided to head there for breakfast. The first time I ordered the creamy mushrooms with haloumi, on brioche toast and was not disappointed. It was amazing! Husband enjoyed his works breakfast and our coffee was indeed delicious. The second time I ordered the corn fritters, because I figured I couldn’t go wrong after the creamy mushrooms. I was wrong. The fritters, although large and tasty looking, were bland and very crumbly. I wasn’t impressed at all. The coffee that day was a bit burnt as well, I think perhaps there was a new staff member on the coffee machine due to talk we heard with her and management. The last time we went to Gana, I went back to my creamy mushrooms and found they weren’t as delicious as the first time. The chef was a little heavy on the seasonings and they were quite strong in flavour. All in all, it’s a nice little cafe with very quick service and friendly enough staff. Consistency seems to be a bit of an issue here. It’d be great if the kinks could be ironed out to make this a real destination as Papamoa is lacking in the cafe stakes.

Reasonable atmosphere but the food was very average. The Thai curry was more like a coconut soup and the BLT was all bread.

Sadly I have been let down the last few visits by what used to be the best little cafe in Papamoa.
Food lately has been underwhelming and overpriced although the coffee is great.
Today i visited for a late lunch at 2.30pm and it seemed the cafe was already cleaning up for the day although it doesn’t close till 4pm.
I ordered a Malay chicken noodle salad which had a lot of noodles, nothing I would describe as salad and 2 small cubes of chicken in it. I mentioned this to the chef I presume who told me that ‘the girls who serve it don’t always mix it up enough ‘ There was no offer of fixing it or even an apology. I suggested she might want to tell ‘the girls’ this and she said ‘ they know’ …. Ridiculous…
The coffee was good but on leaving at just after 3pm the toilets ( and half the cafe) were being mopped and unusable and I couldn’t use them..Seriously i could have had a better meal at Pak n Save deli bar and at least the toilet there stays open while they are.. Avoid this cafe for food at least! This is my second poor experience here in two weeks…

We have eaten her twice in the evening, as well as many times during the day.
The evening meal was not gourmet, it didn’t pretend to be, but was delicious and ample and the service was great. We will return.

Great little cafe, actually the only cafe worth going to in Papamoa! Staff were somewhat friendly, and efficient, food was hot, quick and cooked to perfection, ample portions, and priced just right. A definite must visit when your in the area. A++ will be back.
