Delicious food! Creamy tasty hummus with chilli oil and fresh soft pita, divine chicken sharwarma, flavorful salads. Lovely staff! Great service! Best Turkish delight i’ve ever tried. Thoroughly enjoyable – dinner so good we went back for lunch the following day where we also enjoyed good coffee. Definitely recommend

The fat Camel can’t be beaten for price and tasty family meals. It is our family’s cafe of choice, great vegetarian options too. I will be taking our Aussie visitors there over the summer. We have enjoyed good service over the years and found the staff esp the owners engaging. Just writing this makes me want to eat a stuffed pita pocket! keep up the good work!

A really enjoyable experience. Best falafels and baklava I have tasted for ages.
We found the staff very welcoming, attentive and the coffee especially was great!!!
Obviously there are a lot of regulars as they were greeted by name.
A lovely couple of hours spent relaxing with friends in the sun.

A thoroughly enjoyable lunch was served promptly and cheerfully in a setting oozing character and ambience. We went with three starters rather than two mains and were absolutely delighted with the quantity and freshness of the flavours. Our wine order was muddled but quickly and cheerfully rectified. We would definitely return.

Very rude waiting staff, the owners need to watch their staff more. As the previous reviewer said, being busy is no reason for rudeness to your potential customers. We were told to wait outside in the rain when we asked for a table, and when we said it was raining, the waitress had the cheek to run outside and look up to the clouds with her hand up raised to make the point that it wasn’t raining; it had been raining a few minutes before, and it rained again when I left. There is no need for such rudeness towards customers. The food is good, after saying all this. Now, when we come to the restaurant (to get a takeaway only!) we check on the staff before we enter, to make sure that the rudest staff on not on duty.

Placed order incorrectly (treated poorly for it) overcharged 50c per beverage.
Being busy is no reason to lower your customer service, it is a opportunity to show how good ones service can be, advertising inaccurate pricing on the menu and treating the customer as a inconvenience when busy is just terrible service.

One of the best pita pockets I’ve had in New Zealand, if not the best! Highly recommended if you’re stopping by in Whangarei.

What a fabulous find! Went for the first time today. The food was delicious. Plenty of choice for veggies too. I ordered the falafels with a host of different salads and they were divine. We also ordered the dessert platter to try a bit of everything which was full of sweet treats from the Middle East like baklava, halva and Turkish delight. It was great to sit out in the sun too and not be near a main road. The staff were attentive and friendly. The place was clean and the toilet was nice too, (very important I think!). Would definitely go again. Good to see it also does takeaways too. Whangarei needs a place like this. Makes such a change from the standard cafes in town with their uninspiring menus and everything containing either chicken or bacon. Well done Fat Camel, I hope you are here to stay.

Mmm… Beautiful food at good prices. Unforunately the bokara was sold out, so I had half of the last one with a fellow diner. Delicious! Followed by the Camel pita pocket, a divine mix of lamb and beef mince, yoghurt dressing and salads. Lastly I pigged out on the dessert platter, scoffing the baklava, taking home most of the Turkish delight, halva, dates and spicy ginger crunch. The service was great, really friendly. The food was presented well (some needed pics!) and the prices were good too… Or so I thought until I was driving home, adding up the bill in my head… Half an entree,$3; pita pocket $8.50; dessert platter $12.50… Oops I think they accidentally charged me $33 instead of $24 but I should have checked. At the end of the day, it was a big group of us who all split the bill umpteen ways, and mistakes happen. I’m happy!

Fat Camel is a truly unique experience and has great food and very friendly staff. Good value for the budget eater with big dishes and a good wine selection again and low prices.

This is a great place to eat, great food, atmosphere, and very reasonable prices. I have eaten at many eateries around NZ and overseas and I can recommend this small cafe.
