This place is fabulous, amazing food. My mum was visiting from the Uk and thought they did the best hot chocolates in Dunedin. We are frequent flyers to capers which offers great service, food and is totally child friendly (having at least 2 high chairs). We have recently tried the new lunch menu which was exquisite. I would highly recommend to all.

Generally good, although the orders take a LONG time to arrive (even the coffee, which should be relatively quick). Don’t go there if you have less than an hour to spare.

Great pancakes with endless maply syrup in each table! They can cater to those who are gluten-free (they have gluten-free bread). One of my favourite places in Dunedin – the service is one of the best I’ve encountered! They have a reasonably wide range of food to order, without being over the top. And once again, I must talk about the pancakes. Just great, heaps of types you can order and a pancake of the month makes it THE place for breakfast/brunch in town. I have my fingers crossed for gluten-free pancakes!!

We love capers, the pancakes are the best in Dunners!, coffee is always great and my children adore the hot chocolates. The lunch menu has something for everyone and they do a cracking eggs bennie.
Staff are great, welcoming, nothing is a bother and always friendly.

Capers serve the most delicious pancakes in Dunedin in my opinion. The atmosphere is great, although it can get a little loud at times. Haven’t had the chance to try other dishes on the menu yet but definitely a place worth going back.

As I work in the Food Industry I had plenty of choices of places to take my 6 friends from overseas but I choose Capers and was not sorry for the decision. The menu was varied and we all tried something different. Not a scrape left on any plates because it was all so delicious. Only great comments from overseas guests who have travelled the world.
I will be back again

I like this place for breakfast they serve huge pancakes and the prices are very reasonable. We had to wait for a table but service was fast and friendly. It does get a little hot in temperature in the cafe but the food is worth the wait.

This place is amazing! Fantastic service from friendly staff, busy and fun atmosphere and food to die for.
We have been to Capers a few times, and always enjoy the consistency of good coffee and great food. Therefore, I was a little reluctant to a new menu on my recent visit. Wow, what a fantastic and creative new line up.
The meal was amazing – I had the prime Angus beef ribeye steak on ciabatta with garlic prawns (which was a really hard choice as there were so many options that looked divine) … amazing flavour and quality.
Never disappointed – would rate this as a favourite for sure!

We arrived in Dunedin Saturday 25 Feb and Capers was handy while we waited for our room to become available.
Firstly we had to ask for the table to be cleaned from the previous occupants. It was quite busy but very noisy. Service ok and we ordered the fritters and pasta.
Fritters were nice but the pasta would have to rate the worst ever. Overcooked, the chicken tough, the bacon salty and the gremolata very bad. I had an overbearing taste of garlic with me for 24 hrs.Comment from Simon N. of Capers Cafe 29/02/2012Hi i am sorry to hear about your bad experience and will take your… More »

Gorgeous food – I had the blueberry pancakes, it never disappoints and a half serving is more than enough! Even better that it features in the Entertainment guide so you get one free main course when another is purchased. Friendly staff, I was with a large group and we all got our meals within minutes of each other. Cozy, warm atmosphere on a dismal Dunedin day. A perfect way to start the day

Just tried some of the meals on the new lunch/brunch menu at Capers, and it was fantastic! I had the steak on ciabatta with “rustic fries”….YUM! My friend had the Salmon served with beetroot salad which was also amazing! Definitely recommend these meals, and the other items on the new menu look equally as tasty…..and really good value for money (kind of like a restaurant meal for a cafe price). The food was really fresh and beautifully presented! Capers has always been my “go to” place for breakfasts because I always know I’ll get a great meal and really good, friendly service – so it will now be a “go to” place for lunches too! Can’t wait to try the corn fritters, Moroccan lamb, more of those delicious fries, and if like me you have a sweet tooth you must try the tan slice…. it’s HEAVEN!

I’m simply amazed by the consistency of capers, the staff are top class and the breakfast menu is simply divine! I’ve been coming to capers everyday on my way to work for 3 months now as I moved here from London, best coffee I have had in Dunedin and in New Zealand for that matter!
The breakfast menu is great also, the pancakes, what can I say! extreme value for money not to mention an explosion of flavour and a real great start to the day! Also being British I really love the big breakfast, if your extremely hungry I recommend the Works! Incredible value!
I also heard there is a new lunch menu coming, can’t wait to try it out!
I truly recommend Capers to everybody.

Best breakfast/brunch in Dunedin. Large meals for reasonable prices (almost everything is less than $20). Cosy environment and good service too. I recommend the eggs montreal on brioche.

This is definitely my favourite breakfast place in Dunedin. Service is always good and staff, despite being busy, is always immaculate and very friendly. The pancakes are massive and well worth every cent you are paying for. It would be helpful to note that it does get crowded on weekends, so it’s good to book a spot beforehand. I would recommend this place to everyone.

I love going to capers for breakfast. Its the best place to go when you’ve had a big night before! As a vegetarian I am happy with the wide selection of meals I can have there. Not only is the food good value for money, but they have the BEST pancakes in town. Thank you Capers

went last Sunday after working a huge night out in the Octagon (Rugby World Cup), am always pleased at the value for money menu on offer and got there in time before the breakfast morning rush.
however, was saddened
to see that the Big Biscuit had been taken off the menu as it was my favourite, had the Miners Special in its place with a banana smoothie

What can I say about this place!
We have been eating here for years and have never been disappointed. We started coming to Capers when we where students and now come here with our kids(they love the pancakes especially)The staff are always accommodating to our needs and very friendly. We have found the food and the coffee to always be consist ant and a very high standard. The new decor looks pretty awesome and gives the place a great cafe feel.
I particularly love the cooked breakfast and that the eggs are poached in a French Poacher so you never get soggy toast. I hate soggy toast!
I recommend this place to anyone looking for good honest value for money, quality food and coffee and also anyone looking for friendly service with a smile. Keep up the good work Capers!

Went in for brunch on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago. Was really impressed with the size of the half size pancakes and how quickly they came out. I was so full! The staff were busy but really friendly too.
Perfect for hangover recovery.

Really enjoyed going to Capers, fantastic friendly service. They were very knowledgable around gluten free options and were able to offer a wide selection of options which I appreciated as someone who can’t tolerate gluten. I went with a group of friends recently and all of us were very impressed by the cost, quick service and delicious food. Well done Capers! I will definitely be returning.

Had lunch there the other day for the first time. Was impressed that the cafe was tidy, clean and the staff were really friendly. I got a piece of quiche and two salads, was surprised at how little it cost.
I think I’ve found my regular lunch place away from the office.

On our recent very first visit to the lovely city of Dunedin in July 2011,we were SO impressed with the quality of food, atmosphere and professional customer service we received each time we dined at Capers in Dunedin.
The food choices were great, the food was quality, and well presented and we wish we had a Capers here in Australia near us.
If we lived in Dunedin it would be THE place for us to have a lovely breakfast, brunch, lunch.
The only annoying part is they are not open late for dinner, well when we went to eat at night they were closed.Perhaps they close at a certain time? We mainly had scrumptious breakfasts there for most of our stay in Dunedin.

I recently went to Capers with my family for the first time as we are new to Dunedin and I have to say that the food was fantastic, coffee was great and the service was friendly, welcoming and warm. We had a highchair brought to our table for our baby without even having to ask for it which was great. The full blueberry gourmet pancakes with cream were amazing and I didnt leave hungry thats for sure as I had a banana smoothie while waiting for my meal and that was a meal in it self, best smoothie Ive had in a very long time. The whole family enjoyed everything and we are proud to say that we are now going to be regular’s to get our weekly Capers fix. Thanks heaps to the Capers team!!

My experience of Capers has been superb. It has a great name for its pancakes and these certainly lived up to the name. Service was good with friendly staff. I didn’t have a coffee so cant directly comment however the amount of people ordering coffee must mean good things. I always find this is a great place to bring friends and family from out of town as I know we can rely on the food and service.

This is one of my favourite places to eat in Dunedin! I was in with the family last weekend, and we all loved it. The kids loved the pancakes, and my wife is gluten free and had many alternatives on the menu to choose from. Staff were great as well. And they do takeaways so I can have lunch during the week! Would definitely recommend.

Known for it’s pancakes, I’d actually like to recommend the salads. Delicious and super generous, this is a great place to go for a salad (be careful of the muffins, they are too good as well, hence the salad eating).

Went in yesterday for breakfast with my girlfriend, who is gluten intolerant. She was surprised to find that they had a wide range of gluten free options. She had the french toast with gluten free bread.
Usually this is an issue at other cafes, but not for Capers. Thanks, will be back.

The staff were really friendly and efficient. Overall this was my favourite restaurant we ate at while in dunedin and i cant wait to come back again for those pancakes! Highly recommended.

I was so impressed some of their meal menu, especially uncle sam’s pancake and BLT. I had uncle sam one, it served with heaps of tasty bacon on top of yummy their famous pancakes. It was so yummy. And my friend had BLT that nice crispy toasted herbal Italian taste bread and delicious sauce made very very special BLT. The espresso coffee was nice of course. They provided friendly and comfortably service for us. We will visit again shortly to try daily salads. Good job and keep going guys!!

Went for lunch and Capers was bustling as always. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. The service was great, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Highchair was provided for my wee boy. One star deduction because you have to go outside and down the alley to go to the bathroom! Other than that, couldn’t fault it

I’ve only ever been to capers for the pancakes – both for breakfast and lunch and they are fantastic, the only criticism I have is that they need to have a smaller sized pancake rather than a ‘half’ pancake or a ‘full’ pancake. The half pancake was the size of the plate incl. the fruit salad and yoghurt/cream. I’m afraid to know what the full pancakes are like, but they need to have a smaller pancake for those who want to indulge – not to have a heavy meal!

was sorely disappointed when my partner and I went for breakfast after a long night at work. Having enjoyed many breakfasts at Capers before I now will not be returning. We both had the eggs benedict… which looked almost like a McDonald’s breakfast. little plastic cup like eggs, congealed gluggy bright yellow hollandaise, no spinach/greenery, shoddy little sachet of tom sauce, our grilled mushrooms (an extra) were forgotten and when they arrived they were not what one would call grilled. On e would hope after an average meal the hot drink would save some grace but no clearly a chai was too hard to get right and to top it off the service was below standard

went on a sunday morning with my BF for brunch, we both had the deluxe pancakes. was a busy day and a little noisy but the food came really fast, would definately suggest getting a half size though, i was absolutely stuffed and only got just over half way through mine. but a good experiance all round

Incredibly impressed. Went in for breakfast with my girlfriend with a short timeframe. We both had the eggs bendict and a flat white; food was amazing. Perfect hollandaise, amazing ciabatta and free range eggs with a generous helping of bacon. Yum. Service was flawless and everything was great value. Regular breakfast spot from now on.

You are spoiled for choice when you go here. The food is all very good, and I know it’s a pancake place but the veggie lasagna and the pastas on the lunch menu are freaking awesome as well.
Not to mention the amazing real fruit smoothies.
If it’s busy (which it normally always is), expect to wait a while, but it will be worth it

Great pancakes and good coffee… however the staff were verging on rude and I was somewhat surprised that I was made to pay an extra 50 cents for some extra maple syrup- would’ve thought the $14.50 that I paid for the pancakes would have covered that..?

When me and my little sister ordered a pot of tea for two, we automatically assumed it would be proper tea. Then the waitress placed mugs on our table with a tea bag in each and a pot of boiling water. I decided to look at the price board to see what price they put on a tea bag… $3.50. I could have and should have stayed home and enjoyed the same cup of tea for 10c. What a rip off. Interested to know what others think…

personally coming from wellington a city of cafe’s i was looking to be rather stunned if not happy from hearing much good review from the residents of Dunedin of their infamous pancakes. the pancakes i have not tried but now have no intention of returning to try. the service was far below par with a less than pleasant barista manning the machine. having ordered a Vienna coffee not a particularly difficult recipe but was presented with an oversized bland milky “vienna” that seemed more like either a poor hot chocolate or latte, neither description qualify. should anyone from that company be there they’ve managed to brutalise their award winning gourmet coffee bean .The offered food luckily was particularly bad, rather good from the places I’ve been in Dunedin. but the service and the poor manner of the barista spoiled the quaint atmosphere of what could have been a regular morning stop over.
