I loved my meal at the Bantry the staff were amazing the restaurant warm and inviting on a cold winters night...the food was good would have loved a vegetarian option on the mains menu but I was very satisfied with the beautifully cooked salmon...I will be returning..

A very enjoyable meal with 3 excellent and attentive waitresses. I had the steak, my husband the lamb neck (boneless) and we enjoyed them both very much. With 1 course for $30 , 2 for $45 and 3 for $55 it is a good deal.
My comment would be that the desert ( chocolate torte) and perhaps the entree( fish cake) could be just a little bigger portion wise.
However I would recommend the Bantry to anyone wanting a nice leisurely meal in upmarket surroundings. Would gibe 4 and half stars if I could.
Thanks to Kris and Terry From Catellis motel up the road for recommending that we went there.It made for a great birthday celebration.

I was a little nervous after booking when I read the previous review but everything was amazing. My girlfriend and I regularly dine out at some of the best restaurants in Auckland but the Brantry had service to beat the best of them!
The food was of a very high standard but not at all pretentious - good honest quality food. The pricing was fantastic at $45 for 2 courses or $55 for three! For the quality of the food this was great. The staff were very attentive, ensuring everything was as we wanted and making sure we always had drinks. My only criticism would be that the wine list did not have many varieties available by the glass but what they did have was nice.

What have they done! We dined here last year and it was wonderful, but something has changed as our experience here this year was not good.
The nice wooden seats with the blanket draped over the back were replaced by cheap plastic outdoor chairs, the waitstaff didn't introduce themselves and just gestured us toward our table and i don't know what radio station was playing but it certainly wasn't the pleasant dining music we remembered from last time. Despite it being late in the evening there were several flies buzzing around and on the walls which was unexpected for restaurant of this quality and this time of year. The cutlery was also water stained and quite scratched.
Both my partner and I ordered the lamb as they were voted as a top lamb and beef restaurant the previous year. The waiter knew little of the menu and was no help at all in selecting out dish. The two staff we asked about wine matches to the food clearly just made up their answer on the spot! It would have been better if they just admitted they didn't know and ask someone else for help!
The wine came pre-pored so we weren't sure if we even got the wines we ordered which was unusual compared to our previous visit. We ordered the squid as an entrée. It had a really weird smell and was very chewy. Not like any squid i'd had before so i only had a few pieces before giving up on it. The lamb we ordered for the mains tasted very good but it and the vegetables was not up to the standard of our previous dining experience. Both of our cuts (we ordered two different lamb dishes) were very fatty. Our desserts were very poor in quality and still had big clumps of baking soda visible in the cakes!
We weren't very impressed with the delivery of the food. The plates were just dumped on our table without a word. The bread rolls accompanying the meal were also stone cold which is quite different to the nice warm homemade bread rolls we got here last time.
I guess the biggest let down for us was towards the end of the evening when one of the waitstaff could clearly be heard telling a fart joke to customers at another table! I'm sorry, this is not appropriate behavior for a restaurant. In general the service as very poor and we couldn't wait to get out of there.
We expected better and won't return or recommend any longer. Sorry.

We enjoyed a family celebration, with 26 of us form the ages of 6 through to senior years. The private rooms were ideal for family pictures and general milling, great art work too. Our host for the evening could't have done more to enable the night to run smoothly, the service was definitively superior, fully attentive and intuitive service. In fact everyone spoke very highly of the experience. The food didn't disappoint us either, with differing dietary restrictions accounted for. The meals were served promptly (they all came at the same time pretty much thanks to 3 staff ) WOW. The food was divine! We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I can't sing their praises high enough. I will make every effort to go back again if I am in Taupo. Incredible service is so rare to see these days, so wonderful to have experienced staff along with a top notch menu.

Went to dinner with my husband for my birthday 25 Jan 2011, service could not have been better, chose Taupo Acacia 2009 wine which was superb. We then had the duo of pork entree and the venison for our mains and the food was divine followed by great coffee, unfortunately could not fit in dessert but next time we will see. Defintely recommend.

Recently dined here with a party of four and had a truly delicious meal, very creative menu which had lots of choice. Would have given this restaurant 5 stars but for the lamb which was quoted as being served medium rare but was very definitely rare...Not the way I like it, but my husband finished it off for me! Other than that everything was pretty near perfect including friendly service.

The owners have done a great job with this restaurant. Was there few weeks ago. Food and Wine list is amazing together with staff...

this restaurant is what got me addicted to fine dining up there with The French Cafe food wise which was recommended by the waitress, not many people at the time but thats the way i like it depends on what time and season you go as ive missed out on a table before, service was great as was atmosphere best ostrich and venison ive ever had melt in your mouth cant wait to go again.

It was dark and raining on a Sunday night in Taupo, which made us miss The Brantry at first pass as it's tucked away, out of the main town centre. However, once in the door we were greeted warmly and given a decent table in the empty restaurant.
The menu choice is ala carte and small with 5 or 6 mains and starters. This is very difficult for a non meat eater/vegetarian as the choice was well, meat or fish! Several items were also unavailable, but alternatives given. The food was of good quality and very nicely cooked and presented, although not enough time was given between courses and we felt rushed because of that, even though only three tables were taken the whole time.
Those two other tables were filled during our starter, which gave the place some ambiance, otherwise it was a bit like eating in your grannies front room, although there's supposed to have been recent refurbishment. The carpet had seen better days and a rug was surreptitiously placed to cover 'something', while the table and chairs were 'spun dried' around the perimeter of the room.
So the downside(s); We'd chosen Brantry to celebrate a special occasion and front of house girl was pleasant and smiley, although she sounded awfully bored when reciting the specials and unavailables. If eating at a pricey place like this, I'd expect the waitress to be dressed in something other than leggings and a t shirt! It's classier than that.
Our bill came to over $200 for two, with starters, mains, one dessert and without coffee, mainly because the wine list started at $40 a bottle (for something that you could get for around a $10-20 in the shops) Our chardonnay was $49 a pop which caused palpitations for my OH.
The kitchen door is annoying and the waitress banged in and out of it like she was going a round with Frank Bruno. We could hear every word said in the kitchen while the door was flapping away (and the staff should know that)
When we went to pay, we were charged less for the salad as 'it was past it's best' Actually I'd have preferred to know that before eating it, not afterwards!
Would we go back? Possibly, although there are restaurants aplenty in Taupo and we'd like to know this one has pulled it's socks up first. Food quality is good, but the other stuff lets it down for a restaurant of its class.
