Reviews for Black Olive Restaurant

29th January 2013-
We had a lovely dinner at the Black Olive. We started with a shared entree of pumpkin hummus and bread, the bread was hot, delicious and plenty of it and the hummus was very nice. Our mains were the mixed grill and were large. My favourite was the beef eskander which was perfectly cooked. The waiting staff were attentive and very nice. The only thing that could have improved was the carb choice of rice (which was tasteless) and bulgar wheat (which had a tomato flavour that was a bit too strong) and we heard other patrons commenting on this as well. But we will definitely be back and with a BYO licence we found it to be reasonably priced.

I have been to Black Olive 3 times now, each time for dinner. While the menu is somewhat limited (although they were about to introduce a tapas menu when we were there last) the food is always so tasty. The service has been great each time with very friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff. The chef came out to chat with us on two occasions, as we were paying and to see whether we enjoyed the meal – a very nice touch.
Thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the decor, the staff and the food. Will definitely be back.

I bought beef & rice, soup & baklava yesterday at the Petone Carnival, Black Olive stall.
First I had soup and baklava. I would have liked the beef & rice more if the rice wasn’t cooked with butter. Generally, I thought the food was good.
Service:
I went there twice yesterday. The first time was normal. But when I went there the second time for Beef & rice, the staff said in a quite rude tone when she was giving me the food, ‘Could you Pay, PLEASE!’ I was rather upset by the tone (as if I wouldn’t pay or too slow to pay? Excuse me, you were just passing the food to me and I had to get it!), but didn’t say anything. As soon as she said that, she realised mine was just about to be paid by my husband right next to me to her colleague. She didn’t say anything. There was no thank you, no apology or not even an excuse for being rude.
Since the majority of the reviewers gave good marks for the service, I’ll visit the restaurant next time and will try other food and see how their service is like.

Went for lunch on a Friday, beautiful setting…waitress was lovely. Food was devine…the rice alone is supurb dish…I had the chicken…gosh it was just beautiful. I note they do a cooking class…I think I’ll go. The flavours were just beautiful…the turkish coffee was a great way to finish. Thanks Black Olive…I’ll be back!

We were all very impressed with the food, atmosphere and the service too. All reasonably priced, even the wine. BYO would be better though.
